Open Letter to Congress

I have observed from a distance the actions of the Senate and House of Representatives over the last 20 years of my life. Your performance has been lacking in one key area. During these 20 years of relative prosperity, our country has sailed forward and yet you have continued to add ballast to the ship. The ship has grown larger, but you have added ballast at a more rapid pace. Now those that have been adding ballast wish to bail us out. How about we bail and you remove ballast.

Please don’t attempt to stimulate the economy. Do not put money into the economy via new programs and projects. Do not put money into the economy via lowering taxes. Try the road less traveled.   My state is looking to cut its budget, and they will look to you for money. Don’t give it. Follow the state’s example and look to reduce the Federal budget. For too long Capital Hill has been spending money on projects and programs that have not rewarded this nation to the degree the funds rewarded those who received them, and those who allocated them. Our nations values the school teacher, the police officer, the fireman, the doctor and the nurse, but we do not value the inexperienced sea of experts, with no real world experience, who garners the greatest individual rewards for researching, measuring, planning and administrating the delivery of education, safety and healthcare services to the public. This is not a wise time for expensive schemes, if there ever was such a time. Practice fiscal responsibility.

Capital Hill has for too long written misguided legislation, that provided little or no funds, and few or inappropriate procedures to enforce the legislation written. This legislation encumbering those individuals and institutions that sought to obey the law, while giving advantage to those who were not subject to the new law or chose to ignore those parts found inconvenient. See Sarbanes Oxley. Whether you believe in God or natural law, you must hope justice is meted out by one of these two forces, because justice meted out by men is far from perfect. Most of the citizens of this great country are wise in the ways of conducting themselves in public and in private. We trust them, when we are driving our cars or walking down a busy road. We trust them to care for their children. We trust them to donate blood to the Red Cross and other healthcare organizations. We trust them to donate money and time to charities. We trust them to do what is due, and we are let down when they don’t, and we are lifted when they do more than is required. I do what is due, or I do less or more. At the end of the day, I must be honest with myself about what I have done. If I’m honest, I recognize that I am forgiven shortcomings and therefore I should forgive my fellows their shortcomings. God or natural law will bring us all to justice in the end. We as a community, The United States of America must hold each citizen accountable, as best mere humans can, to behavior acceptable in the community, but for the most part, we must trust our fellow citizens and God or natural law and not overstep our bounds in seeking justice. When someone or an institution breaks a law in a manor that garners great public attention, please don’t over react by writing a new law.

If you follow my advice, the wisdom of your actions will make other countries more confident in the United States and our dollar. The exercise of fiscal restraint and legislative restraint, will give confidence to the United States investor, entrepreneur and other members of the private sector. This country will survive your term in office. Your legacy will be weather you came to its aid with mature judgment, or you were a hindrance.
